Fresh energy for blogging and add value to the vCommunity again

Normally, I write only technical blogs, but now this blog post is more about the challenges I faced at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.

Like almost all IT Infrastructure and Engineer graduates, you’ll start as a first-line Helpdesk or Servicedesk engineer.
At job interviews, I always got the question: “Where do you wanna be in 5 to 10 years?” My answer at the start of my career was: “I want to become an IT Consultant” so I can solve the customer’s IT problems.

Eventually, when you are one, you point to the next star on the horizon.
For me, this was… becoming an IT architect. During my time as a VMware Consultant, I created some small-sized logical designs, mostly technical. The combination of working as the hands-on IT guy and working on designs gave me a happy feeling. After some time as an IT Engineer/Architect you want to know, what will be the next step in growing as a person within a company.

In the middle of the year 2023, I came by accident in contact with a Enterprise Architect and he was looking for a Technical Architect with experience in the VMware product portfolio for a newly build IT company with a large project/program from a Cloud to Cloud migration. He had a contagious energy, it was if we knew each other for a long time. I thought this must be a matched made in heaven and found my next phase in my career. I said yes on becoming a Technical Enterprise Architect, but then………..

…….. everything became too complicated.

It was a hard landing in a new role the first couple of months. The job role description was not matching the context what was created by my interview(s). The Enterprise Architect was dismissed from the project after the first month. He was my buddy to teach me becoming a Architect. The new follow-up Architects on the program didn’t had the task to buddy me. Although I heard from co-workers from several departments it was a relieve how I was presenting myself as an Architect, it still didn’t felt comfortable. The VMware footprint within the IT company was smaller than the companies I visited during my time as a Consultant. The main focus of the end customer was moving to SaaS offerings or going to the public clouds. Hosting workloads at the IT company’s datacenters was out-dated… I felt lost between all the politics, SaaS, public or private clouds. A lot to learn of new techniques, methods and way of working. The connection with the VMware products was completely gone and felt my knowledge slipping away.

I decided that this Technical Enterprise role was not something for me and wanted to back in my previous role as a (Private) Cloud Engineer/Architect. This time not working for a consultancy organization and build connections within a IT company. Lucky for me Uniserver was looking for a new Cloud Engineer and their recruitment team contacted me if I want to work for Uniserver. I knew Uniserver already, because I did some days of consultancy for them in the past. The atmosphere, the culture, the colleagues in the team was very big plus…. and they are still working with VMware products.

All I can say: happy to work with VMware products.
Like the title says “it feels as a fresh energy”, ideas for new blogs and add value to the vCommunity again.
